Info About Missouri Car Accidents

Car accidents are one the most prevalent injuries that exist in the United States today. In 2011, Missouri had 142,966 reported accidents. Out of these 716 had fatalities, with a total of 786 being killed across the state. While about 7% of these were caused by bad weather conditions such as mist, fog, rain, or snow, the large majority occurred because of a negligent or intoxicated driver. By drinking before driving, or failing to remain focused, drivers risk the lives and well-being of others.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, about 5% of accidents in Missouri were a result of drunk driving. In rural areas, that percentage goes up to 6.5%. Of the accidents that had fatalities, about 27% involved alcohol. 3,630 people were reported to be injured from accidents involving alcohol. Another huge cause of accidents is distracted driving, which was responsible for more than 39,200 accidents. Drivers can be distracted from things like using a cellular device, eating, adjusting the radio, or using the GPS system. While only using cellular devices is against the law, a driver is still at fault for not focusing on the road no matter what they are doing.

Other causes include speeding, which played a role in 23,998 accidents in 2011, 271 of which had fatalities. 21,297 accidents were a direct result of a driver tailgating, after which they rear-ended the car in front of them. Failing to obey a traffic law, refusing to yield the right of way, and veering into the wrong lane were also major reasons for car accidents.

Platte City, Missouri

Platte City originally began as a dam on the Platte River so that the founder, Zadock Martin, could build a flour mill in 1838. By the next year, the site was approved as the location of the Platte County Court because it was centrally positioned. In early 1840, the town had six stores and 400 citizens and by 1842, the court house was built. Unfortunately, Platte City was burned to the ground by a Union Squad during the Civil War in an attempt to capture a dangerous soldier. Everything was eventually rebuilt in 1867.

The current population of Platte City is 5,200. It is still the seat of Platte County, located only 25 miles from the metropolitan area, Kansas City, allowing it to have a small town feel with the conveniences of a large city. Platte City is conveniently located only 9 miles from the Kansas City International Airport. About 90% of its inhabitants are White, with 5% African American, 1% Asian, and 5% Hispanic or Latino. The median income of its residents is about $72,000, with about 30% of the population having attained at least a Bachelor's degree. According to the Platte City website, the community seeks to maintain a high quality of life within its community so it can continue to be a great place to live.
